Production Notes about the film,
"The Pearl Diver's Tale -after Hokusai's Ama to Tako"

"The Pearl Diver's Tale" was inspired by a Japanese tale about a woman who sacrificed her life for her husband and infant son, in order to steal the tide jewels—magical gems that were used to control the sea. My text is also informed by Katsushika Hokusai's famous erotic wood block print "Tako to Ama" or "Diver and Two Octopuses." 

In my poem, I wanted to explore ideas of desire, impossibility, feminine power, and the nature of sacrifice. The pearl diver is encouraged to give up her life for a dangerous mission that does not belong to her. She is ensnared by a monster that seeks to overpower and control her. She retrieves the jewels—the seat of power—and holds them in her possession, only to give them away as she dies. I wanted to tell her story from the feminine perspective of being a wife, a mother, and woman, to explore the impossibility of what is asked or expected of women. To examine the facets of what must be abandoned in the service of love. To look at the parts of a woman's power and identity which although they must be surrendered, belong to her.

The Pearl Diver’s Taleは、夫と幼い息子のため宝ー海を支配するために使用された魔法の宝玉ーを盗み、命を犠牲にした女性についての日本の物語に触発されました。私のテキストは、葛飾北斎の有名なエロティックな絵「タコと海女」または”Diver and Two Octopuses”からも素材を得ました。


私の詩では、欲望、不可能、女性の力、犠牲の性質についてのアイデアを探求したいと思いました。海女は、自分のものではない危険な任務のために彼女の人生をあきらめるよう勧められています。彼女は彼女を圧倒し、制御しようとするモンスターに捕らわれています。彼女は自分が死ぬ時に人々に渡すためだけに、宝石（権力の座）を取り戻し、宝石を手に入れます。私は彼女に妻、母、そして女性であるというフェミニンな視点から物語を伝え、女性に求められることや期待されることの不可能性を探りたいと思いました。愛の奉仕で放棄されなければならないものの側面を調べること。降伏しなければならないが、しかし同時に彼女に属している、女性の力とアイデンティティの部分を見ること。
